Infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) are one of the types of a wide class of armored fighting vehicles that are designed to deliver infantry to the battlefield. Unlike armored personnel carriers (APCs), which also perform this function, IFVs also perform the task of supporting infantry and tanks directly in battle formations. Accordingly, they are better armed and generally better protected. While armored personnel carriers are armed with machine guns (often large-caliber), IFVs usually have small-caliber automatic cannons as their main armament, and one or more machine guns. And some models, like the Soviet BMP-3, are even more heavily armed.

Nevertheless, the boundaries between APCs and IFVs are blurred and rather arbitrary. Very often, on the same platform, manufacturers create vehicles belonging to both types, with the difference mainly in weapon modules. Moreover, sometimes the same vehicle is called both an armored personnel carrier and an infantry fighting vehicle in different sources. In this photo review, the criterion by which the vehicles were selected is the IFV definition from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). According to this document, the IFV is an armored combat vehicle that:

  • is intended for transportation of an infantry squad;
  • is armed with a cannon with a caliber of at least 20 mm and sometimes with a guided missile launcher.

The review does not include armored combat vehicles of the USSR and post-Soviet states, which formally fit the definition of the CFE Treaty, but are traditionally called armored personnel carriers (for example, the Russian BTR-90 and Ukrainian BTR-4), and airborne combat vehicles.
