Ceremonial units in one form or another exist in most modern armies. In states with a monarchical form of government, as a rule, royal guards have been preserved. In the republics, the picture is more motley: here, various formations of the Republican Guard, guard companies, presidential regiments and the like can perform ceremonial functions. However, all these divisions with different names have a lot in common.
First of all, they are united by the commonality of tasks. Ceremonial units participate in protocol events at the meeting of foreign delegations, to some extent ensure the safety of senior officials, perform guard duty at state monuments, pay honors to the dead and deceased servicemen, veterans and statesmen. In most cases, even in conscripted armies, such units consist of volunteers who are carefully selected for physical fitness, appearance, motivation and mental characteristics. Finally, usually ceremonial units have a special colorful (and often historical) dress uniform, which is very different from the uniform worn by ''ordinary'' military personnel in their countries.
