Two World Wars that happened in XX century sometimes in most unexpected ways had been a catalyst to growth in numerous industries besides making humanity to suffer losses. War of attrition made to think about food security of all parties to world conflicts. Even national programs that fundamentally changed diet of hundreds of millions people were developed. These events echoing in menus around the world to this day – people started eating more vegetables and fish precisely then.
Military propaganda did not avert from this by spawning plenty of posters that look pretty amusing from modern point of view.
WWI Canadian poster (on the left) assures that buying fish helps to save meat for both Canadian and Ally soldiers. In turn American poster (on the right) created during WWII under «Victory gardens» campaign assures that growing peas, radish and cabbage during a war is important as ever. Can’t argue with that.
Own vegetables throughout the year and chicken raised with own hands – what could be better for a common victory over an enemy as well as personal benefit?
Furthermore, vegetables grown literally outside the door of your own kitchen is a vitamin treasure, and cultivating them is a spring of happiness and well-being. Such posters were designed mostly for women.
